SANTA IS 100 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!
This was by far the most delightful interview I have conducted for this website and project!
Santa Santapante Calderone is a happy centenarian with a sharp mind who can vividly recall her life! And enjoed sharing with us!
Born in Campogrande, Messina, in 1912, she, her three boys and husband left for the USA in 1956 and lived in Pennsylvania for three years with relatives before moving to the Hartford area in 1959 and where the entire family has lived since! She is the proud grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 2.
A seamstress by trade, she recalled getting a job in Pennsylvania for 99 cents an hous in 1956 and getting a payraise of 2 cents after 90 days! She made the mistake of sharing the news with some colleagues who were not as lucky in getting a raise, but she managed to survive the situation.
In 1960 her pay was $1.25 per hour in one of the many clothing factories which populated the Hartford area in those days.
Santa took particular joy in recounting an event from back in 1951 when the family was still in Campogrand and living in a farmhouse ( no electricity; no running water; no facilities). They were told that an American cousin who was serving in Germany would come down to Sicily to visit! He did but they ran into a couple of minor problems: The chickens they had diligently killed ( a rarity in those days) turned out to be not the favorite food of the cousin ( who spoke little Sicilian) and the next morning when he asked about the facilities ( non existent) Santa laughinly told us how he went to narrow and low canals which carry the water to the land to relieve himself!
I did not ask her what is her secret to longevity but if I had to pick one factor I would say her sunny disposition: Santa is a very happy person, surrounded by the love of her three sons, and all the other family members!
