Casa Emigranti Italiani 

A famous local politician was addressing a crowd composed of members of most of the Italian clubs in Hartford . He delivered a punch line: think how strong we would be if we all united in one club! And instead of the applause he was sure to follow, what followed was absolute silence.

The above tells you more about our clubs than any study could ever do! While back home in Italy the parochial frictions between say Floridia and Canicattini have largely disappeared, here the older generation of immigrants has not moved on! Just like the Sicilian dialect: it is no longer spoken back home but here it is still widely practiced!

I recently spent some time researching these clubs . Largely created between 1890 and 1940, most of the clubs  fit the pattern of the times, i.e. a mutual aid society usually built around a town, a saint!

But even in those far away times you can see efforts being made to consolidate these clubs and to leverage the greater strength in numbers: all without success, just like today!

And then you see some unique clubs: The Italian Literate Society, the Italian Motherhood Club, and, unfortunately, the Fascist Club!

Some survive to this day, such as Sons of Italy ( founded in late 1890's) ; Floridia Society( 1923).

Very difficult to determine with accuracy the first Italian club but it would appear that it wasn't until the mid to late 1890's when these clubs started to appear! Over the next 50 years they would be supported by an influx of new waves of immigrants who would leave Italy for the USA.

Now a days the surviving clubs seem to me on their last leg! Average membership age must be in the mid 70's, young people are not joining and no new immigrants are coming to replenish the membership!

For the last 8 months or so I joined a friend of mine in an effort to bring about a merger of equal between the clubs with the objectives of creating an organization and center that would meet the needs of the old but also attract our children!

Peace between the Arab world and Israel may be easier to achieve! Some members listened but most just have no interest in changing and don't seem to care about leaving a center for their children! Worse yet they accuse us of being interested in their money!

No good deed goes unpunished!

I came to the USA in 1970 and after a couple of years I left the clubs and  I have not taken part in their activities for some 40 plus years! But I have come to the conclusion that when my generation disappears so will a slice of culture, of life, of tradition! Our children, mostly born here, simply have no or little ties to back home.

That is why I wrote a book From Sicily to Connecticut, to record my recollections of festas, traditions, family growing up in the 50's and 60's. And that is why I started the web site, Casa Emigranti Italiani!

And so as counterproductive as it may seem, we have opened a new club that will cater to italian families and will retain the traditions and culture of our homeland! Time will tell if we will succeed but it is worth a try!

Un famoso politico locale si rivolgeva a un pubblico composto da membri dei club italiani a Hartford. Ha pronunciato una battuta: pensiamo quanto forte saremmo se tutti noi fossimi uniti in un club! E invece dell'applauso era sicuro di seguire, quello che seguì fu il silenzio assoluto.

Quanto sopra ti dice molto di piu’dei nostri club che qualsiasi studio potrebbe mai fare! Mentre  in Italia, gli attriti parrocchiali tra dire Floridia e Canicattini sono in gran parte scomparsi, la vecchia generazione di immigrati non è cambiata! Proprio come il dialetto siciliano: non è più parlata a casa, ma qui è ancora ampiamente praticato!

Di recente ho trascorso un po 'di tempo alla ricerca di questi club. In gran parte creati tra il 1890 e il 1940, la maggior parte dei club usono il modello dei tempi, cioè una società di mutuo soccorso di solito costruita intorno ad una città, un santo!

Ma anche in quei tempi lontani si possono vedere gli sforzi compiuti per consolidare questi club e di sfruttare la maggiore forza dei numeri: tutti senza successo, proprio come oggi!

E poi si trovono alcuni club esclusivi: la società italiana letterato, la maternità Club Italiano, e, purtroppo, il Club fascista! Alcuni sopravvivono a questo giorno, come Figli d'Italia (fondata alla fine del 1890); Floridia Society (1923).

Molto difficile determinare con precisione il primo club italiano, ma sembra che è stato alla metà e la fine del 1890, quando questi club hanno iniziato ad apparire! Nel corso dei prossimi 50 anni sarebbero stati sostenuti da un afflusso di nuove ondate di immigrati che avrebbero lasciato l'Italia per gli Stati Uniti.

Ora i club superstiti mi sembrano alla loro ultima tappa! Età media dei membri deve essere a metà degli anni '70, i giovani non stanno unendosi a questi clubs e non ci sono nuovi immigrati che vengono a ricostituire l'appartenenza!

Per gli ultimi 8 mesi circa ho lavorato con un mio amico nel tentativo di realizzare una fusione di parità tra i club con gli obiettivi della creazione di una organizzazione e un centro che potesse soddisfare le esigenze della vecchia generazione, ma anche attrarre i nostri figli!

La pace tra il mondo arabo e Israele potrebbe essere più facile da raggiungere! Alcuni membri hanno ascoltato, ma più semplicemente non hanno alcun interesse a cambiare e non sembrano preoccuparsi di lasciare un centro per i propri figli! Peggio ancora ci accusano di essere interessato a loro soldi!

Nessuna buona azione resta impunita!

Io sono venuto negli Stati Uniti nel 1970 e dopo un paio di anni ho lasciato i clubs e non ho preso parte alle loro attività per circa 40 anni! Ma sono giunto alla conclusione che quando la mia generazione scompare così scomparira’ una fetta di cultura, di vita, di tradizione! I nostri bambini, per lo più nati qui, hanno semplicemente non o poco legami con le nostre citta e paesi originari..

Ecco perché ho scritto un libro Dalla Sicilia al Connecticut, per registrare i miei ricordi di feste, tradizioni, famiglia prevalenti negli anni '50 e '60. Ed è per questo che ho iniziato il sito web, la Casa Emigranti Italiani!

E così come controproducente come può sembrare, abbiamo aperto un nuovo club che saprà soddisfare le famiglie italiane e manterrà le tradizioni e la cultura della nostra patria! Il tempo dirà se ci riusciremo, ma vale la pena di provare!
