Born in Hartford on Front Street in 1929, Emanuele returned to Noto with his parents in 1933 before coming back to Hartford in 1947.
The father had emigrated to the USA in 1912, had returned home to fight in the Italian Army and again returned to the USA in 1920.
Nele's recollections of Front Street? Small shops everywhere; an unpaved road bustling with life; all or mostly Sicilians.
A barber from his youth, Emanuele worked in two shops: the Amato Barber Shop on New Park Avenue for 24 years starting from 1948 and then spent 13 years at another shop located on Park Rd. in West Hartford. He retired in 1995.
In 1948 barbers charged 65 cents for a haircut and 35 cents for a shave! Emanuele was paid $35 per week base pay and 50% of all income after reaching $43.
By the time he retired in 1995 a hair-cut cost $9.75, hair styling $18.00 and no shaving.
In 1971 he and his wife decided to resettle back to Noto but after one year decided that life in the USA was more to their likings and returned.
Emanuele and his wife have three daughters, one of which lives in Sicily.
